IN CHARACTER

CONTENT WARNING Interacting with Grace is likely to come along with references to or mentions of child abuse, sexual abuse and assault, (botched) abortion, violent murder, and the abuse and mistreatment of prisoners and the mentally ill. The canon comes part and parcel with lots of discussion of mental illness, including the suggestion of multiple personality disorder at a time when not much was known about it. If you would rather avoid this or want to opt out altogether, let me know on this post (comments are screened). No hard feelings!

SHIPPING Cautiously yes, but it would be a very slow burn. Generally I prefer to ship with people I've talked to OOC just to get a feel for stuff and be able to send each other dumb memes and whatnot. In terms of canon, if by some small miracle someone plays Mary Whitney, I would be very interested in a ship!

FIGHTING / INJURING Sure. Grace is very small and not a fighter by any means, so she'd be easily overpowered, but let's talk about it OOC.

MINDREADING Please PM or contact me otherwise first if your character is a mindreader and would try to read Grace's! I would prefer to hold onto the mystery of her backstory and guilt rather than force a situation where I have to decide one way or the other.

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS Grace is one of those “delicate constitution”-type Victorian women who might be a little bit touchy about a lot of things. She’s a believer in God and wouldn’t take religious cynicism particularly well, but she’s not a zealot and would probably not disparage anyone else’s religious beliefs unless they were rude to her first. She also has a very strong fear of doctors which might lead to a full-on panic attack depending on the circumstances.

A NOTE REGARDING PORTRAYAL The whole point of Alias Grace is to never give a clear answer one way or the other if Grace is innocent or guilty of the murders. This might be frustrating, but I think it would be OOC for me to make a decision one way or the other (at least out loud). I have my own thoughts on the matter in terms of my portrayal, but I don’t want to share them. However, there’s an element to my portrayal that I want to clarify, because it might come up in threads. It’s kind of a spoiler (for the novel/show, but also for Grace as a character if you particularly enjoy the mystery of her), so only click below if you want to see it, but it involves a specific mental illness.

Spoilers for Alias Grace

My portrayal of Grace has a legitimate alternate mentality with the voice and mannerisms of Mary Whitney; this alternate personality acts as a protector for her. I’m certainly not intending to demonise those with DID by suggesting that their alternates are murderous – the only element of this I want to establish with 100% clarity is that Grace’s periods of amnesia are legitimate and are instances where ‘Mary’ has taken over for her in moments of extreme trauma as a kind of dissociation, e.g. the Nancy/Kinnear murders and her time in the insane asylum. This has no bearing on whether or not Grace was physically involved in the murders or not, only that she isn’t lying when she says there are parts of the murders she doesn’t recall, because she wasn’t awake to recall them.

BACKTAGGING Always! I function by backtagging so I understand if things get picked up and dropped here and there, or we can definitely handwave a thread if it's dragging on too long for you.

THREADHOPPING If it's (non-private) texting/network conversations, it's almost always fine, but I'd prefer if you asked first if it was a log thread.

FOURTHWALLING I'd rather avoid specific acknowledgement to Grace's canon (the book and the Netflix adaptation) which make reference to her being a fictional character or a fictional interpretation of a real person. I'm cautiously open to the idea of characters maybe recognising her name/story based on the real Grace Marks if this is something you think your character might know, but I obviously want to deal with this respectfully and on a case-by-case basis. I'm happy to play out facetwin things!

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS I would really appreciate warnings for footage (specifically, video) of car accidents, including in fiction, so please warn if you're sending me a video that includes anything like that.
